Mayfield High School

You're invited to a powerful and engaging presentation on Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) by Nick Chignoli, at the La Vida Project - Innovative Youth Programs & Resource Center in the HOK room, 118 N Main St, Las Cruces, NM 88001.

The presentation will take place this Wednesday, March 25, from 5:30pm-7:30pm. Please scan the QR code on the flyer to register.

ACEs include experiences such as physical or emotional abuse, witnessing domestic violence, or growing up with a parent who struggles with substance use or mental health. These experiences can have a deep and lasting impact on a child’s development but with knowledge, connection, and support, healing is possible.

This presentation is for parents, caregivers, teachers, neighbors, and anyone who is interested in building a community where everyone can thrive.

Students in the Academic Career Experience (ACE) program recently participated in the Dress for Success event, where they were given a budget of $130 to shop for professional clothing at Dillard’s.

This opportunity allowed students to select attire that will help them feel confident and prepared for future academic and career opportunities.

The event was made possible through the generous sponsorship of Nusenda Credit Union and the continued support of Dillard’s and the Las Cruces Public Schools Foundation, whose partnership helped make this experience a success for our students.

Scholarship Applications are now officially being accepted and must be submitted by Wednesday, April 1st 2026! Don't miss your chance to apply!

The LCPS Foundation continues to support high school graduates by offering scholarship opportunities to help cover the cost of tuition.

Only one application is required to be considered for all available scholarships however students are only eligible to receive one scholarship. Applicants must provide two references, upload the most recent transcript, respond to questions about their school and community involvement, and submit an essay.

Awards range from $250-$2,000. The recipients of the scholarship awards will be announced on April 17th 2026. Awards will then be presented to students during Senior Awards Assemblies.

These scholarships are made possible through endowments and other funds through the LCPS Foundation, with the generosity of numerous community donors who sponsor dedicated scholarship funds.

Congrats to Michael Montoya, our LCPS Athlete of the Week from Mayfield High School. The Trojans shortstop is batting .400 with a .571 OBP, four RBIs, four runs, and four stolen bases. He also holds a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage, anchoring the infield while leading by example on and off the field. Way to go, Michael!

Flashback Friday takes us back to the 1965-1966 school year, when Mayfield High School published the first edition of The Shield, the school’s yearbook.

That first yearbook was dedicated to Tom J. Mayfield, a longtime educator and LCPS superintendent whose leadership helped guide the planning and construction of the school. After decades of service to education in New Mexico and right here in Las Cruces, Mr. Mayfield retired in 1965.

From that first yearbook dedication to the generations of Trojans who followed, Mayfield High School remains a proud part of the LCPS story.

This is Las Cruces Public Schools, then and now.

We Dedicate —

Mayfield High School proudly dedicates the Shield for 1965-66, its first annual, to the person who is most responsible for the existence of the school--Mr. Tom J. Mayfield.

Mr. Mayfield was born in Mount Olive, Mississippi, August 25, 1900. While residing there, he attended Smith Consolidated High School. His undergraduate work was done at the University of Mississippi, and his masters degree was earned at the University of New Mexico. In 1928, he came to Las Cruces where he was both a teacher and a principal until 1939. Mr. Mayfield then became superintendent of schools at Lordsburg where he served until 1947. In 1947 he became superintendent in Artesia remaining there until 1954, when he returned to Las Cruces Schools as superintendent. He served in this position in Las Cruces until January of 1965 when he retired.

Mr. Mayfield has held state positions such as president of the New Mexico Education As­sociation and Executive Commissioner of the Association. He is also very active in his com­munity as a member of the Baptist Church, the Lions Club, and the American Legion. His principal recreational interests are fishing, hunting, and golfing, as he is basically an outdoors man.

Because he was a guiding force in both planning and actual construction of this school, the Mayfield High School student body respectfully dedicates this - its first yearbook - to Tom J. Mayfield, a prominent educator, community leader, and man of action.

March STEM Spotlight: Mayfield High School STEM Team

Each year, the STEM team at Mayfield High School competes in the New Mexico Governor’s STEM Challenge under the leadership of Mr. Grandville Richardson, the team’s advisor.

In this challenge, students are presented with a question focused on addressing a need or challenge within the state of New Mexico. They work through the engineering design process to develop a solution. Students design a prototype, test it, make modifications, and ultimately present their work to a panel of judges.

The judges are industry partners from across New Mexico. Through this annual showcase, students not only present their projects but also build connections that can lead to internships and future college opportunities.

Through these authentic learning experiences, students develop critical thinking, communication, and real-world problem-solving skills that prepare them for college, careers, and meaningful contributions to their communities.

Las Cruces Public Schools proudly recognizes Paytyn Martinez, our Career and Technical Education (CTE) Student of the Week!

Paytyn is a standout at Mayfield High School with a 3.5+ GPA. She is active in HOSA, cheer, and baseball while gaining hands-on experience in pediatrics at MountainView Regional Medical Center.

She recently advanced to state after competing in Human Growth & Development at the HOSA regional competition. Her hard work and dedication truly set her apart!
