Board of Education Unanimously Approves Rezoning Option — New census data required population balances in each district

At Tuesday’s regular meeting of the Las Cruces Public Schools Board of Education, Option 2 was unanimously adopted as the new election boundary map representing all five LCPS school board districts.

School board districts are not the same as attendance districts for students.

The shift was required after 2020 U.S. census data showed significant growth in Districts 4 and 5 since the last census count in 2010. According to state statute, all districts must represent a constituent population within five percent of the average population.

A map detailing Option 2 showed an expansion of Districts 1 and 2 into District 4 to create balance, and an expansion of District 3 into District 5. Detailed explanations about Option 2, along with other map options, were included in several public presentations hosted by LCPS. The public was invited to join either in person or virtually and feedback was solicited.

The next step is to file all necessary paperwork, including board minutes and documentation of public meetings, with the New Mexico Secretary of State by Dec. 31. The district will not consider another rezoning opportunity until 2031-2032, immediately following the next U.S. decennial census.
